How Drug Smuggling Affects the Society

Several nations the world over are grappling with illegal trade of goods within their boundaries. Those who take part in illegal trade see it as the only way to avoid dealing with the governing authorities. Smuggling is carried out by people who are unwilling to pay tax or by those dealing with illegal products. The goods sold on the black market may range from perfectly legal ones whose supply is regulated by the government or illegal products that are not allowed into the country. Drugs of various kinds are also smuggled in and out of some countries. The reasons, why people take part in smuggling of drugs, are better known by themselves. The trade, however, has numerous negative effects to both the trader and the society as well, their reasons notwithstanding. A number of the effects of drug smuggling are outlined below.

First and foremost, a larger portion of these drugs that are sold on the black market is illegal. The fact that they have dangerous side effects could be the reason why they were prohibited in the first place. Some may even be unable to meet the particular health standards required by the authorities. The manufacturers could be cutting corners in their production with the aim of making quick cash. If such drugs are used by consumers, they may adversely affect the users’ health, even to the point of causing death.

The other effect of drug smuggling is that it causes people to lose their livelihoods. Restriction of trade is done by governments that wish to cushion their citizens against unfair trade practices from outside the country. The reason for this is so that local companies can establish themselves and grow faster. But when goods of such nature are smuggled into the country, the delicate balance created by this restriction is destroyed. The local market players end up being deprived of the opportunity to compete fairly and some may even be driven completely out of the market. This will rob them of their source of livelihood needed to survive.

Smuggling of drugs also negatively affects the economy. The revenue that is used to run the government’s activities is derived from tax imposed on goods being trade. The first priority of every government is to provide its citizens with the appropriate services when needed. Illicit trading of goods therefore starves the government of the much needed income, meaning that its unable to serve its people well.

Furthermore, the supply of illegally traded drugs is never guaranteed. By virtue of their having to dodge the authorities most of the time, illegal traders are inconsistent in delivering the drugs to users. Those who consume such drugs will therefore find themselves in pain if they were much dependent on the drug.
